China's Hudong-Zhonghau Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of CSSC, has commenced delivery of CMA CGM's new class of LNG-fueled containerships with the CMA CGM Bahia. This marks an advancement in LNG technology, expanding their previous 23,000 TEU class to the first 13,000 TEU LNG-fueled containerships. Designed by CSSC's research institute, these vessels are set to be the largest dual-fuel containerships on the South America route. The CMA CGM Bahia, with a 145,650 dwt and 13,200 TEU capacity, incorporates innovations like an intelligent exhaust gas control system, reducing methane escape by 50% and greenhouse gas emissions by over 28%. Other features include a large wind deflector, expected to cut fuel consumption by 2-4%, and an energy-saving device improving propeller propulsion efficiency by 1.5%. CMA CGM continues to lead in LNG adoption, investing $17 billion in a fleet of 120 LNG- and methanol-powered ships by 2027. Hudong-Zhonghau Shipbuilding has floated three more sister ships in this class and holds an order for four optimized versions of the 23,000 TEU dual-fuel vessels.
