Teamsters Canada, representing workers at Canadian National Railway (CN) and Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC), have voted in favor of a strike due to stalled negotiations over safety provisions. President Paul Boucher highlighted concerns that both companies are seeking to diminish safety-related rest provisions, leading to an impasse. Boucher emphasized the union's unwavering commitment to safety and willingness to avoid disrupting the supply chain, crucial for Canada's automotive and battery industries. CN proposed an alternative deal aimed at safeguarding the supply chain and ensuring fair treatment for employees, but negotiations remain challenging. With CN operating extensive tracks across Canada and the US, and CPKC forming a critical link between markets in North America, a strike could significantly impact the economy and disrupt freight transportation. The merger of CPKC with Kansas City Southern further underscores the significance of these railways in the North American transportation network.
